What To Do if Your Car Overheats

1. Crank the heat. Turn off the air conditioning (AC) as it can stress your car’s cooling system. Cranking the heat can helpmove heat away from your engine, allowing it to cool.

2. Pull over. Don’t panic. Try to find a safe place to pull over as soon as possible.

3. Turn off your engine. Turn your car off and consider calling a tow truck.

4. Don’t open the hood immediately. Wait at least 15 minutes for the engine to cool before opening the hood.

5. Check the coolant. If your coolant level is low, topping off your supply can helpprotect your engine and keepit cool until you can get your vehicle inspected.

6. Restart the engine. Try to restart your engine. If it starts, check your temperature gauge. If it returns to normal, you can attempt to drive to your nearest auto repair shop. Keepa careful eye on the temperature gauge while you drive and be ready to pull over again if necessary.
